Independent travel training

Independent travel training helps young people learn how to travel safely and independently. Being able to access public transport helps young people make their own decisions about how they live, what they want to achieve and access different opportunities.

How does it work?

Through personalised support from experienced trainers, young people can learn to travel safely and independently. This enables young people to travel to school, work and social activities, widening their access to education, employment, and community connection. Through developing travel skills, young people will gain more confidence, independence and freedom.

How to access support

Camden offers Independent Travel Training and this is available for young people:

  • aged between 10 and 25
  • currently accessing supported transport arrangements to help meet aims outlined in their EHC Plan
  • whose first EHC Plan names a school out of their local area and qualify for travel support

For more information, please contact your school’s SENCO or the Special Educational Needs Team.

AFK also offer an Independent Travel Training Service for young people and adults with SEND. They offer 1 to 1 support for people who are interested in learning to travel independently and safely. This service is for young people and adults:

  • over the age of 14
  • able to travel on public transport
  • aware of dangers and can develop skills to respond
  • motivated to learn independent travel skills
