Communication and interaction
Children with communication and interaction needs refers to the way children and young people communicate with others around them, how they develop social skills and relationships and how they interact with people. Children and young people with autism may have particular difficulties with social interactions. Every child with SLCN is different and their needs may change over time. They may have difficulty with one, some or all of the different aspects of speech, language or social communication at different times of their lives.
Communication and interaction needs can include:
- speech, language and communication difficulties
- difficulty in communicating with others and expressing themselves
- delays in using language
- difficulty understanding or following social ‘expectations’
- autism
If you are worried about your child’s communication and interaction needs, please speak to your GP, Health Visitor or education setting. You can also complete a self-referral to request language and communication support from a Health Visitor in Camden.

Autism Roadmap – Support for parents, carers and families that have been diagnosed with autism, or who may be waiting a formal diagnosis at CNWL NHS Trust.
Camden Speech and Language Therapy Services – This is Camden’s SaLT service, working with children with a range of difficulties around communication and eating. Information about how to refer and the services provided can be found onthe service website.
Autism | Camden - Camden Care Choices
Camden Disability Action is a user-led organisation run by disabled people for disabled people. Amongst other aims, they provide an advice and advocacy service to help deaf and disabled people access services and resources necessary to participate in Camden life.

Autism Parent Workshops are run in-person/virtually on a termly basis by universal services in Camden. This is an open event to any family/young person (i.e. U-18), who has recently received a diagnosis and would like more information about what support is available in Camden.
