Teeth and oral health

Caring for your child’s teeth will help to prevent tooth decay and get them off to the best possible start in life.

When to start brushing teeth

It is important to start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as they start coming through, which is usually after 6 months. Toothpaste containing fluoride will strengthen their teeth and is safe.

It is also important to make sure your child is eating healthy meals and avoiding sugary snacks in between meals.

Register with a dentist

You should register your child with a dentist as soon as their first teeth appear, so they can start having regular check-ups, and become comfortable with the experience. NHS dental care for children is free.
